In the past, there were different rites for weddings and each action had a special symbolism.
The wedding ceremony included: Cutting Day, Wood Day, Dough Day, Bridal Garment Day, and Marriage Union.
The appointment of the wedding day according to different provinces was called: “orok”, “cut of the day”, “prema e vade”, “cut of the word”. It was thought that postponing this day brought bad luck, so even death did not postpone marriage.
Wood day was called the day when they went to cut wood that was used for cooking and heating at the wedding. In most cases, women and girls went, and very rarely men.
Dough Day is a ritual known throughout Albania and has been one of the most important wedding rites. Sifting the flour and kneading the dough was done by women and young girls whose parents were alive.
The day of the bride’s clothes is the day when the groom’s clothes or dowry were brought to the bride. In general, in all the provinces, the bride’s gifts were brought by men.
Closely related to the sending of clothes is the custom of dyeing the hair with dye, applying henna to the bride.
In this case, women and girls gathered at the bride’s house. Surrounded by her friends, she cried loudly because she was going to be separated from her girlhood, while her cries were accompanied by songs.
