The “Stone City” is rightfully considered the pearl of our cultural heritage. It is in this city that one of the most important museums of local and customary tradition is located. The museum facility is located in the “Palorto” neighborhood and dates back to the 19th century.
Built three centuries ago, the tower-type dwelling, which represents a typical model of the life of a patriarchal citizen family of the time, is still continuing to play the role of the museum in Gjirokastër.
The facility has four floors and all are open to visitors who are fond of ethno-heritage. There are a total of 64 windows, an underground stone pantry for food storage, a water cistern with a capacity of 130,000 liters, a bunker room for protection in case of war or earthquake, 6 toilets, a hammam and a sophisticated system of turrets for self-defense.
In general, the museum rooms are arranged as they would have been used in reality and are decorated with many household items, folk costumes and cultural artifacts typical of a wealthy merchant family of Gjirokastra or Ottoman administrators living in the 19th century. to. It is worth noting that the apartment was rated as one of the most beautiful in the Balkans and among the most modern in terms of functionality at the time it was built.
