EXCURSIONS TO SHKODRA AND KRUJA FROM TIRANA (1 FULL DAY)
09:00 – 11:00 Meet with your guide at lobby hotel and drive for 2 h to Shkodra.
11:00 – 12:30 Shkodra- known as the “capital of north Albania” is one of the oldest cities in the country, founded in the 4th century B.C. as the center of the Labeat tribe of Illyrians. Shkodra’s main tourist attraction is Rozafa Castle. Rising majestically upon a rocky hill west of the city, the outcroppings and battlements paint a blazing picture against the setting sun. It is surrounded by the waters of three rivers; the Drini, Buna, and Kiri. Rozafa Castle – The most important monument to visit in Shkodra is the Rozafa Castle, which rises from a rocky hill to the west of Shkodra. The waters of three rivers, Buna, Drini and Kiri, surround it. Rozafa is one of the major castles in Albania and the most important tourist attraction in Shkodra. The castle dates back to the Illyrians, when the Latin historian Titus Livius named it “the stronghold of the Labeates,” an Illyrian tribe on the shores of Shkodra Lake. The Illyrian queen, Teuta, used it as a base in the war against Rome.
12:30 – 13:30 Time for lunch in a local restaurant (Optional).
13:30 – 17:00 Transfer and start visiting the medieval town of Kruja. Here in the mid-15th century George Kastrioti Skanderbeg led the Albanian princes to victory over the invading Ottoman Turks for 25 years. He remains Albania’s national hero and you will be able to follow his story by touring the Skanderbeg Museum with exhibits, models, reconstructions and paintings depicting the epic of the man and his times. Next the Ethnographic Museum a well preserved house of the 18th century once owned by a local aristocrat adorned with frescoes and displaying an abundance of traditional rugs, clothes and everyday objects. And in the end do not miss the bazaar. Kruja’s traditional bazaar is a cobbled street lined with shops selling, antiques, souvenirs, rugs and carpets, old and new, icons and ornamental filigree.
17:00 – 18:00 – Back in your hotel in Tirana.
