Lëkurësi Castle was built in 1537 by the Ottoman emperor Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The castle and its views remain the main attraction, offering some of the best panoramas over Saranda, the bay, and the Ionian Sea with Corfu visible on the horizon. From the hill, visitors can also enjoy a magnificent view of the valley and mountain range on the other side, as well as the Butrint Lake. The castle was constructed in a square shape with two round towers. Its walls, made of limestone, are approximately 2 meters thick and reach up to 7 meters in height. At the entrance gate, 20th-century artillery is displayed, adding to its historical significance. Lëkurësi Castle is located among the ruins of the old Lëkurës village, atop a high, pyramid-shaped hill. The strategic placement of the towers highlights the castle’s focus on controlling the sea. Historical records suggest that the castle was built during Sultan Suleiman’s campaign against Corfu to gain control over the Saranda port and the Saranda-Butrint road, as Butrint was under Venetian control at the time. Today, Lëkurësi Castle is a perfect blend of history, breathtaking views of Saranda, and entertainment. The castle’s elevated position offers views over Saranda, the road to Butrint, and the sea, including the Ksamil islands. Currently, a restaurant operates within the castle grounds, and small concrete bunkers from Albania’s communist era (1960s-1980s) can be found near the castle. The castle also served as the site of the old Lëkurës village, emphasizing its historical and administrative significance. Visitors can enjoy the magnificent views, which make the climb to the castle well worth the effort. Today, the castle is a popular tourist destination and hosts cultural events such as concerts and festivals. Alongside its historical and architectural importance, the castle is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a natural wonder. Visitors can hike through the scenic trails around the hill or relax within the castle’s walls, enjoying the serene surroundings. Lëkurësi Castle is a testament to Albania’s rich history and cultural heritage. Its strategic location, remarkable architecture, and picturesque landscape make it a must-visit destination, offering something for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and nature admirers alike.
