The Castle of Borsh rises on a hill that ends at the top with a rocky ridge and occupies a central position in relation to the ancient city of Borsh.
The Castle of Borsh is located at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level and has a favorable position for visitors. According to researchers, the castle dates back to the 12th century, although some believe its construction is linked to earlier periods.
This castle was once known as the Castle of Sopot, a name mentioned in the memoirs of Anna Komnene, the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos. During the period of Ali Pasha of Tepelenë, a mosque was also built, which today serves as another reason to visit this important monument.
The mosque is situated near the main entrance of the castle, and although it has suffered some damage, it is relatively well preserved. It is a hall-type mosque with a dome, with massive proportions, built with local materials and without any special care. It is made of worked stone and has considerable dimensions. Its base is polygonal, as is the body of the minaret.
The mosque has a square plan, measuring 8.05 x 8.12 meters. The entrance is through the only door on the northern side and is preceded by a portico, which was once covered with a wooden roof and tiles.
The Castle of Borsh has an important strategic position not only because it is close to the sea but also because it is near one of the two gorges that have crossed the Acroceraunian mountains since ancient times, known in the medieval period as the Himara Mountains, linking the coastline with the interior of the country.
Indeed, the Castle of Borsh and its mosque have undeniable historical and architectural value and are a rare cultural heritage in our country.
